3rd eBario Knowledge Fair
(16 - 18 November 2011)

The e-Bario Knowledge Fair is a regular conference, held in Bario, Malaysia, that showcases the use of ICTs for rural development and is conducted in conjunction with the local community, bringing together researchers, practitioners and policy makers with the residents of Bario and the wider Kelabit ethnic community.

About The Bario Highlands

History : Over a century ago, the Kelabits were involved in head hunting raids, not so much for ritual purposes but as a means to prove one's courage, bravery, guts or valiancy, and to get even with their enemy. However, things have changed. Today among other things, the Kelabits are well-known for the friendliness and hospitality. They embraced Christianity during the 1940s through the influence of Guru Paul, also known as Nimang Tepun.

Activities and Attractions

There are numerous attractios in and around Bario valley, including mountains, local villages, waterfalls, a wide variety of flora and fauna as well as some exotic bird species. Indeed, it is the very diversity of places and people which make this place so special. There are also many other activities which you can do including trekking and mountain biking.

How To Visit Bario.

You can reach Bario by foot and boat but it will take about three weeks. The only practical mode of transport viable to Bario is by plane. MASwings, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airline System (MAS), provides a daily flight to Bario, either departed from Miri or Marudi.
