You can reach Bario by foot and boat but it will take about three weeks. The only practical mode of transport viable to Bario is by plane. MASwings a subsidiary of Malaysia Airline System (MAS), provides a daily (sometimes twice a day) flight to Bario, either departting from Miri or Marudi (which in itself is either a small flight or a 2 hours boat trip from Miri).
Flight schedule from MASwings:
From Miri to Bario, it takes about 1 hour on the Twin Otter airplane which normally seats 17 passengers. At Miri International Airport, each passenger can take around 10 kg for their luggage to take with them. This may be relaxed depdneing on the number of passeners and the current cargo already loaded onto the plane. This can also be different if the flight transits in Marudi. Please check in advance and have someone at the airport to take back your excess luggage!
When passengers are from Bario airport and they are flying back to Miri International airport, the weight of each passenger plus their luggage cannot exceed 150 kg. This is because the runway at Bario airport is very short and the plane needs to be strict about the loaded capacity..
For oversea tourist upon reaching Bario, they can go to the immigration department when required for simple registration. Typically this will have been arranged if you book a guide or are travelling on a pre-arranged tour.
If you have any questions at the airport, either on your arrival or on your return, please ask!. Everyone will be able to point you in the direction of the MAS Wings representative who will help you. Kelabits are always friendly and helpful!
